Cozy up with your friends and ignite your imagination for some storytelling around a fire. This truly unique outdoor fireplace is designed with a very limited budget as a part of other backyard playground facilities. The Haugen/Zohar Backyard fireplace by Haugen/Zohar offers a warm place for kids to play and tell stories outside. Inspired by Norwegian huts and old log construction, the structure uses layered pieces of wood left over from a nearby construction site, making them environmentally friendly with a naturally warm feeling.

The Haugen/Zohar architectural office was invited by the Municipality of Trondheim to realize and outdoor project for a kindergarten. It’s the great place for fire, storytelling and playing. This sustainable outdoor space was built out of left over scrap materials from a nearby construction site. A double curved sliding door was designed for locking the structure. It may be a bit of overkill since my backyard is too small for this thing, but I am so there. The simplistic beauty of this structure is warm and inviting, I feel that it would provide a very intimate setting allowing people to gather socially. Also I see it as a wonderful idea to expand on possibly for more of a community type setting.

Backyard fireplace by Haugen/Zohar structure is made of 80-layered circles. The circles have varied radius and relative center point in relation to each other. Every circle is made out of 28 pieces of naturally impregnated core of pine that are placed with varied spaces to assure chimney effect and natural light. Oak separators differentiate vertically between the pine pieces to assure airflow allowing easy drying of the pine pieces.

While the design is surely stunning, don’t use pieces from the outdoor fireplace to keep the fire burning. The outdoor fireplace would be a great place to roast marshmallows and hot dogs and tell scary stories on cold winter nights. This huge outdoor fireplace by Haugen/Zohar Architects is more like a wooden tepee then a traditional fireplace.
